Steering Boxes
Fast Off-Road Desert Vehicle
When building a Vehicle for Off-Road Racing, Short Course
Racing, or Rock Racing you need to have Fast Input Steering. This is
what Howe Performance has been building for the last 30 years and sets
our company aside from the rest.
We want the Steering Wheel to move from center to lock in
¾ to 1 turn. This is what we call Fast Input Steering. As
you are traveling across the Desert at a high speed and the vehicle
steps out on you, you will have time to catch the vehicle because the
Steering is fast – but you still have your foot in the gas to
keep you on top of the whoops (bumps). Saginaw Steering Boxes are
preferred for your build it allows us to use quicker ratios and 0-mile
parts – this is what makes Saginaw’s better by design.
You would use this Steering Gear even if you are building a
Ford twin I-Beam style vehicle. The Ford Boxes are slow in ratio and
have problems with internal failure. The only time you would use a Ford
Steering Box is if the class you are Racing in requires it.
Rock Crawler
We like to have Slow Input Steering. The Steering Wheel
will then move from center to lock in 1 ½ turns, this allows
the Pump to keep up with the Steering Box and Ram Assist that moves 8
inches; typical for most straight axles. Saginaw Steering Boxes are
preferred for your build – we think they are better by design.
Once you have completed building your Vehicle…
The next step is to mark your Steering Box for Internal
Stops.
We are the only Company in the Industry that makes the
Steering Box stop when the Ram and Spindle stop, this keeps the
hydraulic steering from becoming a tubing bender.

*when building a Custom Pitman Arm always build it around
Snap-On Pitman Arm Puller (Snap on Part# CJ119B) This is so we can
easily remove the Pitman Arm.
Saginaw Steering Boxes are preferred for your build
– this allows us to use 0-mile Parts.
The reason we have you mark your Box is because we want the
Steering Box to stop internally when the Axle stops. Again, this
prevents the Steering Box from damaging the Axle, Ram, and itself.
Once you have marked the Steering Box do not remove the
Pitman Arm.
Be sure to include a note with your Contact information.
Current lead time is 10-12 business days.
We will modify your Sagniaw Steering Box with all new
0-mile parts, nothing re-manufactured.
We prefer these Steering Gears because we can get 0-mile
parts.
